Grow spices and vegetables

In February - March, it's time to start with the very first seeds! Some of the best kitchen plants must be grown indoors to produce a harvest during the summer. An alternative is to buy ready-made plants later this spring, but then you miss the exciting cultivation. To first put the seeds in moist sowing soil, set the seeds warm and wait. Watch them day by day until suddenly one day sprouts!

Then the seeds should be cared for with a lot of light, not too much heat and an even humidity so they stay chubby and green. Sowing is done in poorly fertilized sowing soil; S-soil 50 l which has a mixture of fluffy white perlite grains that make the soil extra airy and loose. Or Sowing soil that is fine-grained dark soil with extra sand so that small seeds get both air and moisture when they germinate.

When the plants have grown and become crowded, it is time to divide and replant them in larger pots, to rearrange them. Now the plants should have a nutrient-rich soil, P-soil is an excellent choice. If you prefer organic soils, EKO soil or Herb soil is a good choice.

What can be sown in March?

The greenhouse crops such as tomatoes, peppers, eggplant and chili need a long development time before it is harvested so they must be sown early. For the garden land, it is mainly celery, cabbage, corn and leeks that must be pre-grown, most are otherwise sown directly when it gets hot in the soil. The herbs of the spice country often take a long time to germinate, but it is possible to take a taste sample once they have come up and grown. Get started and sow chives and parsley, rosemary and thyme!

Sowing times

Exactly when you are going depends on where in the country you live and what conditions you have to grow plants. If you only have access to natural light and ordinary room heating, it is better to wait a few weeks so that the plants do not become too long and accessible. If you can control temperature and light, you can start earlier and still keep the plants compact. Approximate development times from sowing to planting:

12-14 weeks artichoke

10- 12 weeks celeriac

8 - 10 weeks peppers, chili, leeks, eggplant, parsley, greenhouse tomatoes, thyme, rosemary

6 - 8 weeks outdoor tomato, cabbage of various kinds, corn, onions from seeds, chives

3 - 4 weeks cucumber, squash, pumpkin, melon
