Plant in a pot

Florists and garden stores are full of beautiful summer flowers. Here are some tips on how to think about when to choose plants and then to plant.

Be creative with plantings

With the help of annual summer flowers, it is easy to try different styles in swings and pots. Here we have collected tips on how to think to get beautiful balanced plantings.

Take advantage of height differences

Get the height of the planting with a large plant in the middle or in the background. Place half-tall plants around the tallest plant and plant low and wide-growing or hanging plants at the far end. In an elongated planting box, it can be more interesting to put a taller plant closer to one end. If you want to create a feeling of depth, you can plant a lower, flowering plant behind an airy, tall grass or similar. Climbing flowers provide height and background for other plants. Hanging plants fit in tall pots, swings and balcony boxes.

Adapt the planting to the shape of the pot, generally tall tall pots need wide and hanging plants while low wide pots need a little more height in the planting.

Create different moods with color

  • If you choose a color in different shades or different colors with similar hues for your planting, you will get a harmonious result. The harmony of colors gives a uniform expression even if you use several plant species. This works especially well with light pastels and white.
  • Complementary colors, on the other hand, provide effective and intense combinations that make you happy. Try combining orange and blue or shades of yellow and violet!
  • Also do not forget the different green tones in the plants' leaves! Use contrasting colors, such as pink - lime green, purple - yellow-green, salmon-colored - blue-green.

Mix plants

Combine the flowers with grass and other leafy plants that primarily do not bloom but contribute with their beautiful leaves. They balance the composition and highlight the best sides of the other plants. You can use the leafy plants for their shape and size of the leaves but also for the colors of the leaves.

Make use of the different colors and shapes of the leaves and combine flowers with smaller and larger leaves. There are many different types of leaves to choose from: red, gray, lime green or diverse. Small lace-patterned and large finger-bladed or oval, long and narrow. Some with shiny surface, others with soft and matte surface.

Add aroma and taste

Feel free to mix herbs and vegetables among the summer flowers. Parsley has beautiful curly leaves, basil scented leaves are available in many different colors and lettuce grows lush and fast in the beginning when the flowers are still small, after harvest the flowers cover the place where the lettuce stood.
